Student voices shaping the future of our schools
Across the Diocese of Ballarat, students are helping shape the future of their schools through the Student Agency: Schools that Listen initiative, led by Dr Jean Stiles. Aligned with the DOBCEL 2035 Strategy, this program brings together principals, selected Student Agency Facilitators, and students from Years 5-6 and Years 8-10 to explore what makes a great school for all.
In April 2026, students and Student Agency Facilitators gathered at four diocesan forums, where they shared visual essays highlighting what they value most about their school communities and areas they believe could be strengthened. More than 130 visual essays and 850 feedback points were analysed, providing valuable insights into student perspectives.
The strongest identified themes as making our diocesan schools great were: a sense of belonging; kindness and positive relationships; supportive and caring teachers; quality play spaces and facilities; opportunities such as sport, camps and clubs; and inclusive environments where all students can participate.
Students suggested improvements included: upgrading facilities and play areas; increasing opportunities for inclusive play; strengthening student voice and leadership; providing more engaging and personalised learning experiences; and enhancing wellbeing supports.
The findings reinforce the importance of listening to student voices and working in partnership with young people to create learning environments where every student feels connected, valued and empowered to thrive. This work reflects the aspirations of the DOBCEL 2035 Strategy, which prioritises learner agency, belonging, inclusion and excellence, ensuring that students are active partners in shaping the future of learning across our Catholic school communities.
