2025 WorkSafe Awards – Congratulations to Maree McLean

Congratulations to Maree McLean, Kate Quin (Principal, St Mary’s Primary School, Swan Hill), Leah Crough (DOBCEL OHS Coordinator), and all who supported Maree’s return to work journey.

Recently at the WorkSafe Awards in Melbourne, Maree’s story was recognised in a powerful way. From 22 finalists - and five in the category of Worker Return to Work Achievement - Maree McLean of St Mary’s Primary School, Swan Hill was announced as the award recipient.

After 35 years of dedicated service at St Mary’s, Maree experienced a mental injury that left her initially unable to get out of bed. Through accessing psychological treatment, drawing on her own determination, and with thoughtful support from her employer, Maree gradually returned to full-time work over a 12-month period.

In her words: “There shouldn’t be a stigma attached to these things. It’s okay that I wasn’t okay.”

Maree has been gracious and generous in sharing her experience so that others might find hope and courage in their own journey. Her story reminds us that recovery is possible, that support matters, and that a return to meaningful work can be achieved.
